The official Twitter for the TV anime adaptation of Daisuke Ashihara's "World Trigger" has revealed during a stage presentation at the Anime Japan 2021 event held on Sunday that the previously announced third season of the series is scheduled to begin broadcasting this October.
Toei Animation is animating the new season with Morio Hatano serving as the new series director. The series composition is handled by Hiroyuki Yoshino with Toshihisa Kaiya and Hitomi Tsuruta for the character designs and animation direction, and the music is composed by Kenji Kawai. The cast reprises their roles which includes Tomo Muranaka as Yūma Kuga, Yuuki Kaji as Osamu Mikumo, Nao Tamura as Chika Amatori, Yuuichi Nakamura as Yūichi Jin, Nobunaga Shimazaki as Hyuse and many more.
The first television series adaptation consisted of a total of 73 episodes and was aired on TV Asahi from October 2014 to April 2016. Mitsuru Hongo directed the series' first season and the other staff return for the 2nd season. The recently-concluded second season of the series was aired on January 9, 2021 on Japan's TV Asahi's NUMAnimation programming block.
The World Trigger TV anime series is based on Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Daisuke Ashihara. It was initially serialized in Weekly Shounen Jump from February 2013 to November 2018 and transferred to Jump Square in December 2018. Its chapters have been compiled by Shueisha into 22 tankōbon volumes as of June 2020.
Plot Summary via Anime News Network:
One day a gate to another world opened in Mikado City. This entities of the other world, called Neighbors, sent out an invasion force that overran the area surrounding the gate. Given the technological superiority of the Neighbors, the destruction of the city seemed only a matter of time. But then suddenly Border appeared in the town, an organization that researches the technology of the Neighbors to protect this side of the gate. In a short time they built a huge base and became established as the line of defense against the Neighbors. One day a student named Yūma transfers to the same middle-school class as Osamu, a teenager who belongs to Border. He has a weapon called Trigger that is only allowed to be possessed by people in Border, and claims to have come from beyond the gate.
