As Japan struggles to contain a new wave of infections amid the Olympic Games, Tokyo has reported 2,848 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday, double from previous day's count of 1,429, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government. This count surpassed the previous record of 2,520 daily cases reported on January 7 in the capital making this as the highest daily COVID-19 tally since the pandemic began.
The COVID-19 state of emergency is still being implement as it hosts the 2020 Olympic Games. Tokyo has recorded 203,568 infections to date, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of July 26, there were 2,717 COVID-19 patients in the hospital, 78 with severe symptoms.
Nationwide, as of July 26, a total of 875, 618 cases has been logged (count includes Diamond Princess cases) of which 817, 534 have recovered and 15, 141 succumbed from the disease.
