The official Twitter for the new TV anime adaptation of Reiko Yoshida and Mia Ikumi's "Tokyo Mew Mew" manga series has revealed on Monday a key visual, the staff and the release date for the upcoming TV anime series titled "Tokyo Mew Mew New". The anime is scheduled to begin broadcasting in 2022.
The anime will be produced and co-animated by Yumeta Company and Graphinica, with Natori Takahiro serving as the chief director. Yamada Yuka will directing the series and Kameyama Toshiki for the sound production. The character designs will be handled by Ishino Satoshi.
The new anime adaptation has been announced on April 2, 2020.
The series is based on the Japanese manga series written by Reiko Yoshida and illustrated by Mia Ikumi which was originally serialized in Kodansha's shoujo manga magazine Nakayoshi from September 2000 to February 2003. It has been collected in seven tankōbon volumes by Kodansha.
The original manga inspired its first TV anime adaptation with 52 episode anime series by Studio Pierrot. It aired from February 3, 2002 and ended on March 29, 2003. A two-volume sequel to the manga, Tokyo Mew Mew à la Mode, was serialized in Nakayoshi from February 2002 to January 2003.
In 2020, a short 2-chapter sequel was released called Tokyo Mew Mew 2020 Re-Turn which includes all main characters with updated designs. A spinoff, titled Tokyo Mew Mew Olé!, which features a new team of male Mew Mews, was also released.
