The series is based on the Japanese light novel series written by Rui Tsukiyo and illustrated by Reia which began its serialization in July 2018 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shousetsuka ni Narou. The novel is published by Kadokawa Shoten under its Sneaker Bunko imprint. As of February 2019, it has been collected into 5 volumes by Kadokawa.

The novel inspired a manga adaptation with illustrations by Hamao Sumeragi which has been serialized online via Kadokawa Shoten's Young Ace Up website since January 2019 and has been collected in two tankōbon volumes as of July 2020.

English publisher Yen Press describes the novel as:

The Assassin Meets The Hero

Lugh, Dia, and Tarte enroll in the most elite academy in the Kingdom of Alvan. On the surface their goal is to learn how to be knights, but Lugh's real goal is to get close to the hero he's tasked with killing. The mighty hero turns out to be a bit different than Lugh expected, however, and he ends up getting rather close with him. Being a hero isn't all its cracked up to be, it seems. When trouble strikes, will the assassin have to save the one he's supposed to kill?
