The Cast Study of Vanitas TV anime series is animated by animation studio BONES with Tomoyuki Itamura serving as the series director. The series composition is written by Deko Akao, and characters are designed by Yoshiyuki Ito. It was set to run in split-cour with the first cour consisting of 12 episodes airing from July to September 2021. The second cour has been announced to begin broadcasting in January 2022.
The main cast includes:
Natsuki Hanae as Vanitas, the owner of the Book of Vanitas, a human and self-described doctor to vampires.
Kaito Ishikawa as Noé Archiviste, a vampire who is ordered to discern the power of the Book of Vanitas by his teacher.
The series is based on the shounen manga series written and illustrated by Jun Mochizuki which was serialized since December 2015 in Square Enix's Monthly Gangan Joker magazine. As of June 2020, it has been collected into 8 individual volumes with the latest volume releasing on June 22. On April 2, 2020, Jun Mochizuki announced that the manga will be going on indefinite hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
English publisher Yen Press describes the series as:
During a blimp ride to Paris, Noé Archiviste meets Vanitas: a human claiming to be a doctor for vampires, curing them of the malnomen which cause vampires to behave predatorily against their will. The book with which he heals, the Book of Vanitas, is connected to the original Vanitas, the Vampire of the Blue Moon, hated by the Vampires of the Red Moon who form traditional Vampire society. Noé and Vanitas join forces to heal vampires, but there lurks a threat of some unknown force named Charlatan which may be responsible for corrupting the sick vampires.
