Losing someone you love is never easy even for a powerful slime. But what if you could bring them back for a price? Rimuru faces a difficult and dark situation!
EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS
Summary
Rimuru’s return to Tempest is bittersweet; many survived the recent onslaught but others were not as lucky. Myulan reveals Clayman’s plans and the distraught slime deals with her promptly. Despite all the despair, Eren the adventurer comes with a hopeful story.
Heartbreak
The aftermath of the recent attack on Tempest is not easy to take in. The first half of the episode actually depicts the mood picking up as Rimuru speaks and laughs with his subordinates. And then the story hits hard and cuts deep with a depressing bomb. With any war there are always casualties with some more painful than others. The heartbreaking reality causes the typically happy slime to spiral down into despair. He even almost loses control of his powerful aura (which would be troublesome for the monsters currently weakened by several barriers) but the Great Sage keeps it in check. Fans of the show empathize with Rimuru since this death involved a particularly likable character.
Hope
Immediately after the dark and distressing reveal a hopeful ray of light shines both literally (the sun actually rises at this point) and figuratively. Longtime friend Eren (not the titan) and her wards arrive with interesting information. First, Eren’s real name is Elyune H. Grimwald and she is a noble from the Sorcerer’s Dynasty Sarion. Yeah, she's an elf.
Second, there is a slim but real chance to resurrect all the fallen citizens of Tempest! She recounts the tragic story of a Dragon Princess (she looks incredibly familiar) and her ascension to Demon Lord status. The event of becoming a Demon Lord brings her beloved friend back to life! However, there are a few caveats. First, if the soul of the revived has already perished, then that person/monster becomes a mindless creature seeking only destruction. Second, becoming a Demon Lord requires a massive number of human souls. Looks like Rimuru has some difficult decisions ahead.
Achy Breaky Heart
Rimuru flexes his benevolence by helping Myulan despite her deceitful actions. The lovable leader ends up freeing the troubled wizard from Clayman’s control by destroying and replacing her heart. Despite everything that happened, including all the senseless deaths, Rimuru chooses to be kind. However, his next course of action might involve less kindness and more ruthlessness. It’s quite an intriguing dynamic for a leader!
VERDICT
Author's Rating: 8.4/10
This episode was fantastic, emotional, and surprisingly heavy. But, as its title suggests, hope has arrived. The emotional first half was quite devastating as viewers saw a distraught Rimuru mourning the death of a loved one. The description of his experience was fantastic: a calm stillness while also experiencing a storm of powerful emotions. Props to the writers! Who wouldn’t feel sad while watching that scene? Well, some viewers were pretty bummed by what happened. Luckily, the fantasy element came in strong and the slim chance for revival became real. The sequence with Eren telling a story was excellent. The art used to depict the story was amazing and very enjoyable. Also, the episode opened a new and incredulously exciting possibility: Rimuru becoming a Demon Lord! That’s hype. There’s a ton of action to come as Tempest plans its counter-attack!
Relations with humankind are about to change and Rimuru has to make some tough choices. What will he choose to do? What is he willing to give up? Will the resurrection actually work? Find out next week!
