The upcoming "Summer Ghost" short will be joined by new staff and cast members, will be receiving a novel and manga adaptation, and has unveiled new promotional visuals from the creator and illustrator loundraw.
The upcoming short is the brainchild of loundraw, based on one of the illustrations they made. The story focuses on three teenagers, all suffering in ways that make them feel alone and isolated, who become friends over the internet and try to summon a mysterious "summer ghost" that appears when fireworks are near.
The newest visual for the upcoming short features two of the main characters. Tomoya Sugisaki and the titular Summer Ghost, Ayane Satō, can be seen in front of a painted sky. The date of release is also part of the poster.
New staff members that have joined the production are Akira Kosemura, Itoko Toma, Guiano, and Hideya Kojima and will be part of the soundtrack.
The character designs and directing for the movie will done by the illustrator, loundraw, themself. Flat Studio, loundraw's own animation studio, will be behind the animation. Novelist Hirotaka Adachi, also known by the name Otsuichi, will be in charge of the screenplay. Production will be by Flagship Line, and distribution will be by Avex Pictures.
The newest voice actors to join the cast include:
Chiaki Kobayashi who will voice Tomoya Sugisaki, a student who excels at academics but who's passion lies in drawing rather than studies.
Rina Kawaei voicing Ayane Satō, the Summer Ghost
Miyuri Shimabukuro voicing Aoi Harukawa, a teen who suffers from bullying in her school.
Nobunaga Shimazaki who will voice Ryō Kobayashi, a popular student who starts suffering from a deadly illness he keeps secret.
The short is part of loundraw's multimedia project called "Project Commons:, and is set to release in Japan on November 12, 2021.
The short will also receive a manga adaptation, courtesy of Yoshi Inomi in their Tonari no Young Jump service, and will be made available on October 8. Screenplay writer Otsuichi also wrote a novel based on the story, while also expanding the content, which will be available by October 29. Alongside this, a spinoff novel, called Ichinose Yūna ga Uiteiru (Yūna Ichinose Is Floating) is also in the works and will be made available on November 26.
loundraw is an illustrator that is best known for their work in Tsuki ga Kirei, as character desginer. They also designed the characters of the film adaptation of the novel "I want to eat your pancreas" by Yoru Sumino.
