New Year, new anime to look forward to! With 2022 right around the corner, we’ve lined up new series to check out this coming January (it’s lowkey hard to believe that 2022 is so close). Of course, this winter we have titans like the ongoing second season of Demon Slayer, the upcoming final finale of Attack on Titan, and the second season of Arifureta, and a few other continuing series. For this list, let’s take a look at new titles premiering soon so you can add them to your watch list!

Upcoming New Titles
New Year, New Series!

1. Requiem of the Rose King (Barao no Souretsu)

Adapted from a manga written and illustrated by Aya Kanno, produced by J.C. Staff and set to premiere on January 9, 2022. The manga was loosely based on classic Shakespearean plays like Richard III and Henry VI. Given Shakespeare’s usual works, there’s bound to be a fair bit of drama and misfortune in this series plus some flavorings of supernatural elements and action! More info here.

Brief synopsis (AniRadio rewrite):

The story is set in a tumultuous time in the Kingdom of England — the War of Roses — where the House of York and House of Lancaster lay their claims to the throne. The story follows young Richard III, hated by his own mother, battling dark, haunting spirits and all others who seek the throne.

2. Tribe Nine

Part of the multimedia franchise created by Kazutaka Kodaka and Shuhei Yamaguchi, this title is an anime original being produced by LIDEN Films set to premiere on January 10, 2022. Looks like this will be a sports anime with a twist given that they play Extreme Baseball! More info here.

Brief synopsis (AniRadio rewrite):

The weak-minded Haru Shirogane and hopeful Taiga meet up with Shun Kamiya — strongest Extreme Baseball player and leader of the Minato Tribe. The Chiyoda Tribe led by Ojiro Otori, a man shrouded in mysteries, has begun their takeover of all tribes across Neo-Tokyo under orders of the King. With all the tribes in danger, what will theu do now?

3. Tokyo Twenty Fourth Ward

This anime original produced by CloverWorks is set to premiere on January 6, 2022. The art style boasts popping colors and wonderfully designed characters that blend well with the world (at least based on the available PVs so far). Hopefully this anime original goes beyond a pretty aesthetic. More info here.

Brief synopsis (AniRadio rewrite):

The story takes place in Kyokutou Houreigai Tokubetsu Chiku (Far East Special District), a man-made island in Tokyo Bay, known as 24-ku. A life-changing event rocks the solid friendship of 24-ku natives Ran, Kouki, and Shuuta, who were always good buddies. A year after this event, these three buddies somehow meet up again and receive a troubling message from a deceased friend telling them to “choose the future”. The three friends take up the difficult task of protecting their home and ensuring its future.

4. Slow Loop

In addition to the action/drama/heavy anime airing this season, we have quite a few slice-of-life series coming out that’ll start your year with a bit of chill cheer. First, this anime adaptation of a manga by Maiko Uchino that started publication in 2018. The series showcases recreational fishing (yeah, that sounds chill) and the friendship of a few young girls enjoying a new chapter in their lives. The TV anime produced by Connect is set to premiere on January 7, 2022.

Brief Synopsis (AniRadio Rewrite):

Young Hiyori’s deceased father taught her how to enjoy fishing and she heads out for a quick session with a reluctant heart. By some luck, she meets Koharu and the two hit it off while fishing and hanging out. Hiyori reveals that she’s anxious to meet her new step family in the evening and, surprisingly, Koharu is about to meet her step family as well… The story then follows these new ‘sisters’ as they start life anew!

5. Sasaki and Miyano

Next on the slice-of-life list is a story with a little sprinkling of boys’ love. Sasaki to Miyano adapts a manga of the same title by Sho Harusono and the series will premiere on January 10, 2022 with Studio Deen producing. School boys and young love anyone?

Brief Synopsis (AniRadio Rewrite):

Young Miyano frequents Boys’ Love comics and constantly dwells on his effeminate face. One day, an encounter with his senior Sasaki ends in a little brouhaha. The spunky Miyano piques the interest of his senior and Sasaki takes every chance he gets to hang out.

6. My Dress-Up Darling (Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru)

Up next, we have another slice-of-life series spiced up by a little romance and an interesting craft: doll- and dress-making! This anime adapts a manga of the same title written and illustrated by Shinichi Fukuda which began serialization in 2018. The TV anime is being produced by CloverWorks and is set to premiere on January 9, 2022. Be warned, there's a good deal of fanservice in the manga (we'll see how the adaptation handles it).

Brief Synopsis (AniRadio Rewrite):

Wakana Goujou spends most of his time exploring his love for traditional dolls and developing his craft as a dollmaker. He has a bit of trouble making friends at high school thanks to a traumatic experience as a child involving an old friend and his dolls; and so, he spends most of his days alone. Until one day, the giga popular, well-loved, and gorgeous Marin Kitagawa catches Goujou sewing. She storms in and ‘invites’ Goujou to enjoy her secret hobby of cosplaying together. How will the young main fair with the lovely beauty that is Marin?

7. Akebi's Sailor Uniform (Akebi-chan no Sailor-fuku)

From someone who loves dolls to a young lady who loves her sailor outfit, this next series follows a young girl embarking on a new chapter of her life. The anime adapts a manga of the same title written and illustrated by Hiro which started serialization back in 2016. The TV anime produced by CloverWorks is set to premiere on January 9, 2022. Check out our recent feature if you want to know a little more.

Brief Synopsis (AniRadio Rewrite):

The story follows a quirky, young girl from the countryside named Akebi Komichi. She just passed the entrance exam and received a scholarship to the prestigious Roubai Academy private middle school for girls. As she enters this new chapter in her life, Akebi wishes for two simple things: to wear the school’s sailor uniform and to make a ton of friends!

There are a good number of other anime to look forward to this Winter 2022. Hopefully this short list helps explore a few new titles coming up. Let us know which series you're excited for and which ones you'll definitely add to the watch list!
