The current season of Attack on Titan is the fourth and final installment of the series after its successful run since the first season aired way back in 2013. It is animated by animation studio MAPPA after obtaining the rights from WIT Studio (anime's former studio of Season 1, 2 and 3) and is initially listed with 16 episodes. The 17th episode (Episode 76 overall) will be aired in Winter 2022.

The series is based on the Japanese manga written and illustrated by Hajime Isayama. It is set in a world where humanity lives within cities surrounded by enormous walls that protect them from gigantic man-eating humanoids referred to as Titans.

The story follows Eren Yeager, who vows to retake the world after a Titan brings about the destruction of his hometown and the death of his mother. The manga has been serialized in Kodansha's monthly Bessatsu Shōnen Magazine since September 2009 and collected into 32 tankōbon volumes as of September 2020.

The series has become both a critical and commercial success. As of December 2019, the manga has over 100 million tankōbon copies in print worldwide, making it one of the best-selling manga series of all time.
